Jerry is a professor emeritus with the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he worked for 38 years. He began writing professionally in 1966, and has been writing full-time since 1994.

Jerry published his first book in 1970. He published seven novels (all with the University of Wisconsin Press), two children’s picture books, two young reader books, and about 40 nonfiction books (the most recent ones from the Wisconsin Historical Society Press). His books feature Midwestern rural history and country living. He also has one five, hour-long documentaries for Wisconsin Public Television, each documentary based on one of hie books.
